The Indigenous Growth Fund (IGF) is a new $150M investment fund that will provide access to the capital that Indigenous small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have long sought and lacked.  Indigenous entrepreneurs across all industries, including emergent exporters and food and agriculture related businesses, will be able to access the Fund via business loans from a network of Aboriginal Financial Institutions (AFIs) throughout the country.

First Nation Infrastructure Fund

The First Nation Infrastructure Fund (FNIF) helps First Nations communities upgrade and increase public infrastructure to improve the quality of life and the environment in First Nations communities. The FNIF supports a wide range of infrastructure projects on reserves, Crown land or land set aside for the use and benefit of First Nations. The FNIF targets infrastructure categories with long-standing community needs. Off-reserve projects can be considered if they are cost-shared with non-First Nations partners, such as nearby municipalities or other Indigenous partners.

This program is the main pillar of the Government of Canada’s effort to support community infrastructure for First Nations on reserve. The program has three funding streams – operations and maintenance (O&M), minor capital (for projects under $1.5 million) and major capital (for projects over $1.5 million).

The federal Gas Tax Fund (GTF) is a permanent source of funding provided up front, twice-a-year, to provinces and territories, who in turn flow this funding to their municipalities to support local infrastructure priorities. This funding helps Canadian cities and communities of all sizes pilot environmental projects that reduce GHG emissions and protect the air, water, or land. This funding is designed to accommodate transformative, best-in-class municipal projects, meaning they’re highly innovative and impactful. Signature initiatives do not have pre-set environmental targets/thresholds because the projects are unique and evaluated on a case-by-case basis. We prefer projects that have built-in mechanisms to encourage replication and widespread adoption (e.g., innovative business models, partnership models, new financing mechanisms).
